Dominique Ulrich: from a career changer to a software engineer

Software development, client projects and General Assemblies: a young Nimbus employee has a very versatile role

Dominique Ulrich works for the Software Engineering team at Nimbus. To get there, however, she did not follow the traditional educational path in computer science. During her commercial apprenticeship, she discovered her love for computer science and programming. After completing her commercial apprenticeship, she went on to study Business Information Technology. Nimbus gave her the opportunity to take a career change and start into software development. Today, she is involved in client projects, works on further developing Nimbus solutions and ensuring smooth technical operations during General Assemblies.

From a commercial employee to a software developer

Dominique Ulrich started her career by completing a commercial apprenticeship, where she discovered her passion for computer science and programming.

She then studied Business Information Technology and was offered to join Nimbus’ Software Engineering Teamalongside her studies. She seized this opportunity.

“I got plenty of support right from the start”, she says, looking back. “As a career changer, I got to ask any question I had; I learned a lot.”

Dominique is now a member of the development team and works on various digital solutions for Nimbus clients.

Technology meets customer interaction

In addition to her technical work, Dominique often sought to interact directly with customers, so she was soon called upon to contribute to client projects. One of these was the Employee Share Scheme digitization project carried out in cooperation with Galenica. The aim was to create a simple, clear and reliable digital solution for a complex process involving several thousand employees. Dominique loves combining technological development with client cooperation, and her customers are delighted to have her. This is what Heinz Schneider, Galenica, said about working withDominique.

Responsible during General Meetings

In addition to her work as a software developer, Dominique now also plays an important role during AGMs.

She is responsible for technical infrastructures, i. e. rolling out the mobile network, operating the voting direction, as well as for electronic voting devices and access gates. Everything needs to run smoothly during the meeting: votes must be counted correctly, results have to be available immediately, and changes to the agenda must be taken into account reliably. “Preparation is possible for many things”, Dominique says. “But during an actual AGM, we need to take the live moment into account.”

Trusted by experienced colleagues

Among others, Dominique is supported by Senior Advisor Hans-Peter ‘Hampi’ Süess, who can look back on many years of organizing General Meetings.

He describes his role as deliberately unobtrusive: though present on site, he steps in only when necessary. “I know that Dominique is able to see it through”, he says. “For our company, it is important to have young people take on responsibility and gain confidence working with clients.”

Further training in UX Design

Alongside her work, Dominique has started another degree course in User Experience (UX) Design at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (FHGR).

She wants to gain a better understanding of the design digital solutions must have in order to be intuitive to handle for users and to work efficiently. She explains: “When programming, I have a stronger focus on design. I can see the differences between both perspectives and understand both sides better now.” She gradually wants to make greater use of her knowledge in her work for Nimbus.

An encouraging environment for ideas

Dominique particularly appreciates the corporate culture at Nimbus.

“I can contribute ideas, question things and add new points of view”, she says. The company encourages her to combine her studies with her work: this shows how important personal growth and further development are for Nimbus.

Leaving a mark

For Dominique, Nimbus is a place where you can really make a difference. “We develop solutions that need to work reliably in our clients’ daily work”, she says. “I am very happy for our small Swiss technology provider to be able to support large corporations through our solutions.”
